What Causes Tearing? Excessive tearing, or epiphora, is a common complaint for many patients. It is caused by the overproduction of tears from the lacrimal gland, or decreased tear drainage by the lacrimal ducts. Patients may describe a welling of tears on their eyes, tears dripping down their cheeks, excessive wiping of tears, always carrying around a tissue for wiping, or mucous crusting of their eyes in.
A refraction is an important part of an ophthalmologic exam. It requires many steps and expertise. It is usually performed as one of the first steps during an eye examination. First, a patient’s current glasses are read on a machine called a lensometer. Vision is then checked with both current glasses and contact lenses. If a patient is wearing contact lenses, they are next asked to sit.
