Contact Lens DOs and DON’Ts
Proper Care and Handling
Good contact lens hygiene significantly reduces the risk of infection.
- Always wash your hands prior to contact lens use.
- Do not rinse soft lenses in tap water.
- Do not leave open bottle caps or lens caps.
- Clean lens cases regularly and replace contact lens case every 1-3 months.
- Always pour the solution out of the case when you have put the lenses in your eyes and leave the case to air dry.
- Do not top off solutions.
- “Rub and Rinse” helps remove debris, deposits, and microorganisms even if you use a “No Rub” solution.
- Do not sleep in daily wear contact lenses. We highly discourage the overnight use of all types of contact lenses.
- Use goggles over contact lens in swimming pools.
- Do not shower with lenses in.
- Replace lenses as recommended by your ophthalmologist.
- Have yearly exams by your ophthalmologist to check the fit and health of your eyes.
- Remove lenses if your eyes become red, irritated, or experience a change of vision. Contact your ophthalmologist if these symptoms persist.
